Larry Stark is an American photographer, printmaker and conceptual artist. In 1967, with support of his wife, Barb, Larry decided to revolve his work week around the making of art. Rooted in the documentary tradition, Larry extended his photography vocabulary in his print studio through high contrast, often large scaled, hand-pulled serigraphs employing signature half-tone patterns and spot colors.

Stark’s art is part of collections in several public institutions, including MOMA, The Smithsonian Institution, The National Gallery of Canada, The Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, and Detroit Institute of Art. His art has been shared through over 50 one-person exhibitions at public institutions including The Chicago Art Institute and numerous commercial art galleries across the country. In 1970, Larry’s art was sited by a representative of Museum of Modern Art to be “among the best work (camera records) of the day.” Since 2001 Larry Stark has lived in Augusta, Wisconsin.

In celebration of a life well lived, this exhibition is dedicated to Christopher Capen Cook, who was an artist, fisherman, teacher, kite flyer, fly tier, cannon builder, museum director, and a devoted friend. One of Christopher’s legacies was his commitment to emerging artists and photography. Through his 30-year career at Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, MA; Christopher was recognized as, “a maverick and a rascal who delighted in breaking barriers and convention while commanding tremendous knowledge and respect for art history and the essential role of art and the artist in society.” Respectfully, Cook put Addison on the national map with its “mind-bending” exhibitions, one of which was Larry Stark’s first conceptual project One Nation Under God.
